Day 5 Observations

Today is day 5 of our butterfly project and the students are looking at how their caterpillars have changed.

The photo on the bottom is of the caterpillars in their houses on the rectangle table. The numbers are there because it shows who the caterpillars belong to. Caterpillar number 13 passed away. So we got a new caterpillar number 13. Number 15 has yellow spikes on it now and it got bigger.

The photo on the top shows a caterpillar that is in its cup. The cup has a lid. Caterpillar 18 grew a lot over the weekend and it went from 9 mm to 17 mm. The dots on its back got really highlighted because they show better now. Caterpillar 9 it made a something that looks like a web and the web is hanging down and the caterpillar is on the other side.

Caterpillar 2 looks like a worm because he moves like a worm. He is brownish black and has spiky white things on his back. Caterpillar 6 is one cm long and he doesn't like to eat that much. Over the weekend it only grew a little bit.

What do you think this web stuff is? I wonder if they are practicing for when they make their chrysalises (I'm not sure I can spell that word!)

The web stuff we think is silk and the caterpillar uses it to keep it safe predators and weather.
