Our Questions and Theories

How long does it take for a caterpillar to get in its chrysalis?
We think it will take one more week from today (day 16).

What will the painted lady butterfly look like?
We think it will look like a black and reddish-orange and maybe some black dots butterfly.

Why do our caterpillars have spikes?
We think they protect themselves with their spikes.

Why do caterpillars shed their skin?
We think it is because they have grown too much and their skin is too small for them.

Where are the wings?
We think the wings are inside its body where there are no arms or legs and when it is in the chrysalis it makes a hole in its body and pushes out the wings.

Does the caterpillar sleep?
We think that it can sleep all day because sometimes the caterpillars like to dig and exercise and then they need to rest.

Are the spikes on the caterpillar sharp?
I think the spikes are not sharp because it might make holes in the container that is holding it.

I wonder if my caterpillar will still have its spikes when it is in its chrysalis?
My theory is no because if it is in its chrysalis, and it still has its spikes maybe it can break its chrysalis.

Why does the caterpillar have many legs?
I think it is because it can walk easier.

I think maybe one more week on Day 16.

Why do they have spikes on their back?
I think they have spikes because to protect them from predators.

My theory is that it takes about 3 weeks.

I think they will be orange and red and blue and black and will have big chunks of colour.
